Can you count cards in online live blackjack?
Why it works at live tables and not at RNG games
Counting works because blackjack has a memory: every card dealt is gone until the shuffle. When many small cards have been dealt, the shoe is rich in tens and aces. That's good for you: more blackjacks (paid 3:2), better doubles, and the dealer busts more often.
RNG blackjack starts every hand from a full, freshly shuffled deck, so there's nothing to remember. Live dealer blackjack from Evolution, Pragmatic Play and Playtech is filmed in a studio and dealt from a physical shoe that's only shuffled when a cut card comes out. The memory is back.
What makes it hard online
- 8 decks. Each card dealt moves the odds very little. It takes a long, lopsided run to tilt a 416-card shoe.
- The cut card. Live tables often reshuffle after only about half the shoe. The strongest counts tend to come late in the shoe, and many shoes end before they get there.
- Many seats, fast rounds. Up to seven hands plus the dealer's per round, often in seconds. Keeping an accurate count in your head for an hour is harder than it sounds.
- You can't easily sit out. The classic trick of watching without betting until the count is good (wonging) runs into inactivity rules: many tables remove a seated player after a few rounds without a bet.
How the classic Hi-Lo count works
| Cards | Count |
|---|---|
| 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 | +1 |
| 7, 8, 9 | 0 |
| 10, J, Q, K, A | −1 |
Add up every card you see for the running count, then divide by the decks still in the shoe for the true count. As a rule of thumb, each +1 of true count shifts about half a percent towards the player. With a casino edge of roughly 0.5% at good 8-deck tables, you're only ahead at a true count of around +1 or more, and noticeably ahead well above that.
How big the edge really gets
Honest numbers for 8-deck live tables: most of the shoe the casino is ahead. In good shoes the player advantage climbs to a fraction of a percent, occasionally past 1%. That means:
- Counting doesn't turn every hand into a winner. You still lose plenty of hands you had the edge on.
- It only pays if you bet more when you're ahead and little or nothing when you're not.
- Over a few hours, luck dominates. The edge shows only over thousands of hands.
Counting the exact cards instead
Hi-Lo is a shortcut that humans can do in their heads. A computer doesn't need the shortcut: it can track every individual card left in the shoe and work out the exact advantage and the best play for each hand.
Is it allowed?
Counting in your head is generally not a crime. Casinos can still limit or close accounts they consider advantage players, and many casino terms forbid using software or tools while playing. Read your casino's terms and check the law where you live before you play.
